If you have an Aldi grocery store, look for organic apples in a 3-pound bag for $4.99. (The Columbia MO store lists the apples for $4.99, but they ring up as $4.69.) At $4.99, you are paying $1.66 per pound (at $4.69 it’s an even better price!). The apples are not identified by variety, but our family loves them! I do not know how long the apples will be available or at this price so get them while you can. While organic apples have become more affordable, often about $2.49 for a pound of galas or braeburns, you cannot beat the Aldi price!
Remember, when you shop at Aldi, they keep lower prices because they do not pay for expenses like shopping bags and freely available carts. Be prepared with your own shopping bag and to carry your food, or you can pay 25¢ for a cart and use the leftover boxes in the store.
Why care about organic? According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) [www.ewg.org], their research shows that apples are the produce highest in pesticides in the U.S.! If you want to know more about their annual study, and which produce is safest (or not) to buy organic, check out the EWG’s 2014 Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce.
